Ranking Digital Rights' 2026 Telco Giants Edition, published June 22, 2026, ranked MTN Group 2nd of the world's major telecom companies on digital rights disclosure (behind Telefónica), up from 6th place previously, making it the first emerging-market telco to reach the top 3. RDR credited MTN with strengthened governance disclosures, a new advertising content policy, and enhanced user-data-protection disclosures, while noting MTN still lacks detailed AI governance policies, including on AI risk review and whether user data is used to train AI models, and that its transparency gains face testing from the regulatory and political realities of the markets it operates in.

MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita posted on LinkedIn on June 14, 2026 calling for 'greater social solidarity, increasing economic integration and the observance of the rule of law' as South Africa's June 30, 2026 deadline for undocumented migrants triggered regional backlash. Earlier on June 11, 2026 the 'South Africa Must Go' movement marched on MTN's Ghana headquarters in Accra accusing South Africa of mistreating fellow Africans. MTN joined Business Unity South Africa and Business Leadership South Africa in warning that hostility toward foreign nationals harms South Africa's economic interests.

MTN Group, which joined the Global Network Initiative (GNI) - a multistakeholder body that holds tech and telecom companies to independently-assessed freedom of expression and privacy commitments - in 2022, withdrew from the initiative in early 2026 without publicly clarifying its reasons. Yahoo withdrew from GNI around the same time. Ranking Digital Rights' 2026 Telco Giants report flagged the withdrawal as removing an important external scrutiny mechanism over MTN's human rights performance, coming as the company also faced separate scrutiny over a ~5,700-user Ghana data breach and allegations that MTN provided mobile and internet service in DRC rebel-held areas.

Ahead of Uganda's January 15, 2026 presidential election, the Uganda Communications Commission ordered all licensed telecom operators to suspend public internet access and select mobile services. MTN Uganda complied, confirming it acted 'in line with its licence obligations.' Amnesty International said the compliance risked making MTN complicit in human rights violations and urged restoration of access, citing UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights; MTN did not respond to requests to address the criticism. Ugandan telecom operators, including MTN, were subsequently taken to court over the shutdown. The incident followed a February 2025 Open Secrets report documenting MTN's broader pattern of involvement in government-ordered shutdowns across Africa and the Middle East, and an October 2025 six-day shutdown in Tanzania during unrest described as the country's worst post-independence massacre.

During Iran's nationwide internet blackout beginning January 8, 2026 -- described by the BBC as one of the most extreme shutdowns in history and accompanying a crackdown that killed dozens of protesters -- MTN Irancell CEO Alireza Rafiei was dismissed after reportedly delaying compliance with a security-body order to cut internet access, according to IRGC-linked Fars news agency reporting cited by Iran International. Ranking Digital Rights' 2026 Telco Giants Index found that MTN Group, despite ranking 2nd of 12 major telcos overall on transparency, consistently omits data about government surveillance and network-shutdown demands handled by its Irancell subsidiary -- an omission RDR called 'particularly glaring' given Iran's use of shutdowns to suppress dissent. MTN was one of only a few companies in the index praised for disclosing shutdown-demand data in other markets, making the Irancell gap notable as a carve-out.
