SenseTime added to US Entity List over facial-recognition surveillance of Uyghurs in Xinjiang
Oct 9, 2019The US Department of Commerce added SenseTime Group Limited to its Entity List on October 9, 2019, restricting its access to US technology exports. The listing cited SenseTime's facial-recognition and AI technology being used by Chinese authorities to conduct mass surveillance and human-rights abuses against Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang. SenseTime has disputed the allegations. The company remains on multiple active US sanctions and exclusion lists as of 2026, including the Treasury's non-SDN Chinese military-industrial complex list, the Commerce Department's Consolidated Screening List, and federal procurement debarment lists, which have restricted its access to US capital and advanced chips.
