BT Group announced plans to cut up to 55,000 jobs (42% of workforce) by 2030 using AI, CEO later signaled even deeper cuts
May 18, 2023BT Group announced plans to reduce headcount from 130,000 to 75,000 by 2030, with approximately 10,000 roles specifically replaced by AI in customer service and network management. In June 2025, CEO Allison Kirkby told the Financial Times that AI advancements could lead to even deeper cuts than initially planned, saying the original 55,000 figure 'did not reflect the full potential of AI.' BT has already achieved over £900 million in annualized cost savings. This represents one of the largest AI-driven workforce reduction plans in European corporate history.
