On October 30, 2024 Dropbox CEO Drew Houston announced the company would cut approximately 528 employees, around 20% of its workforce, the fourth significant workforce reduction since 2021. Houston framed the cuts as a pivot toward AI-focused product development and away from legacy infrastructure work. The cuts came despite Dropbox remaining profitable.

In December 2023 security researchers and Dropbox users discovered the company had silently enabled by default a 'third-party AI' setting in user account settings that, while Dropbox said did not permit OpenAI to train on customer files, indicated user content could be sent to OpenAI for the company's AI features. The backlash forced Dropbox to publish a clarifying blog post by CEO Drew Houston and pause the setting's default-on rollout. Critics argued the episode showed how easily 'AI features' opt-in toggles can erode user trust around training-data use.

On April 27, 2023 Dropbox announced layoffs of approximately 500 employees, around 16% of its workforce. CEO Drew Houston attributed the cuts to slower growth and an explicit pivot to 'AI-era' product development, foreshadowing the subsequent October 2024 cuts. The 2023 reduction came despite Dropbox remaining profitable.
