A Brasília federal district court ruled on June 17, 2026 (case 0701554-83.2021.8.07.0013) that Tencent violated Brazil's Child and Adolescent Statute (ECA) by offering paid randomized loot boxes to minors without adequate warnings, odds disclosure, or age verification. Tencent was ordered to pay R$50 million (~$9.8 million) in collective damages, part of a combined R$298 million judgment against Apple, Google, Microsoft, Sony, EA, Riot Games, Garena, Ubisoft, Valve, Konami, and Nintendo in the same ruling. Companies must implement probability disclosures, reliable age verification, and refund systems for minors' purchases within 90 days of final judgment or face daily fines of R$100,000. The ruling is subject to appeal and also allows individual children to pursue separate compensation claims.

Between January and March 2026, Tencent conducted rolling layoffs and funding withdrawals across several game studios it owns or invests in. It pulled 'a significant amount of funding' from external studio Wildlight roughly two weeks after its game Highguard launched, prompting staff cuts there; laid off staff at its own Lightspeed LA studio after redirecting the Last Sentinel project; cut roughly 100 staff at TiMi's North American subsidiary; and laid off employees at Sumo Digital. Tencent also shut down its TiMi Montreal subsidiary without releasing a title and was reported to be negotiating exits from several Japan studio investments, part of a broader pattern of scaling back Western studio operations while expanding investment in Asia.

On January 6, 2025, the US Department of Defense added Tencent to its list of 'Chinese Military Companies' alongside other tech firms. The designation, while not imposing direct sanctions, signals US government concerns about Tencent's alleged ties to China's military and can affect investor sentiment and business relationships with US entities.

Tencent filed legal action against FreeWeChat, a website that archives censored WeChat content to preserve deleted posts and expose censorship patterns. The lawsuit seeks to shut down the service, which researchers and journalists have used to document Tencent's content moderation practices and preserve information that would otherwise be permanently removed.

Tencent implemented a mandatory 6PM clock-out policy, requiring employees to leave the office by 6PM on Wednesdays. This represents a significant shift away from the '996' culture (9am-9pm, 6 days a week) that has been endemic in Chinese tech. The policy came after Chinese courts ruled 996 schedules illegal and following increased government pressure on tech companies to improve working conditions.

Tencent's WeChat platform employs sophisticated AI-powered content moderation that censors politically sensitive content for Chinese users, including discussions of Tiananmen Square, Xinjiang, Tibet, and criticism of Chinese leadership. Research has shown WeChat also surveils communications of users outside China to train its censorship algorithms, affecting global users who communicate with contacts in China.

In November 2022, Sustainalytics downgraded Tencent to 'non-compliant' with the UN Global Compact principles, citing human rights concerns related to censorship and surveillance practices on WeChat and other platforms. The rating affects ESG investors and signals significant concerns about Tencent's impact on freedom of expression and privacy.
