On January 10, 2024 Twitch CEO Dan Clancy announced the platform would cut approximately 500 employees, roughly 35% of its workforce. The cuts followed a smaller 400-person round in March 2023 and came as Twitch shut down operations in South Korea, ended Twitch Prime in Japan, and faced ongoing creator-payout disputes. Clancy attributed cuts to persistent unprofitability under Amazon ownership a decade after the $970M acquisition.

In June 2023 Twitch published policy updates that would have prohibited streamers from running their own sponsorship-burned-in advertising and required platform-controlled overlay ads. Top streamers including xQc, Pokimane, Asmongold and Ludwig publicly threatened to leave the platform within 24 hours. Twitch President Dan Clancy reversed the policy within two days, apologised publicly and clarified the rules. The episode crystallised broader creator-economy resentment of Twitch's revenue-sharing changes.

On September 1, 2021 thousands of streamers participated in '#ADayOffTwitch' boycotting the platform for 24 hours to protest Twitch's slow response to coordinated 'hate raids' - mass automated harassment campaigns using bot accounts to spam racist, homophobic and misogynist messages in marginalized creators' chats. Twitch had taken limited action despite months of documented complaints. In response Twitch sued two prolific hate-raid operators in September 2021 and introduced channel-level controls, but creators continued to document insufficient platform-level prevention through 2022-2023.
