In January 2026, a UK tribunal approved a £656 million ($840 million) class action against Valve representing up to 14 million UK gamers. The lawsuit alleges Valve has been price-rigging since 2018 through its 30% commission and anti-competitive practices on the Steam platform. Steam holds approximately 75% of the PC game distribution market. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney publicly voiced support for the lawsuit. A separate US class action (Wolfire Games v. Valve) with a certified class of ~32,000 publishers is also proceeding.

Wolfire Games filed antitrust suit in April 2021 after Valve threatened to remove their game for offering lower prices on competing stores. Internal emails show Valve actively monitoring and enforcing pricing parity. Certified as class action in November 2024 with ~32,000 game developer class members. Damages sought potentially exceed $6.4 billion under treble damages.

Firings are peer-driven with no formal process or transparency.

Reports from People Make Games and GameSpot in 2021 revealed Valve leadership blocked internal diversity efforts and prevented the company from making a Black Lives Matter statement. Multiple former employees described severe lack of diversity, with one stating 'there was never more than one female programmer at the company' during their tenure.

Valve developed Proton (launched August 2018), an open-source Windows compatibility layer based on Wine, in partnership with CodeWeavers. Published on GitHub, it enables thousands of Windows games to run on Linux. SteamOS 3.0, a modified Arch Linux distribution, shipped with Steam Deck. These contributions significantly advanced the Linux gaming ecosystem.
