In May and August 2018 two female DiDi Hitch passengers were murdered by drivers - 21-year-old Li Mingzhu in Zhengzhou (May) and a 20-year-old victim in Wenzhou (August). Investigation found DiDi had ignored prior complaints about the driver in the August case. Public outcry forced DiDi to suspend the Hitch carpool service for over a year, conduct a multi-week internal safety review, and overhaul driver background checks and emergency response systems. President Liu Qing and CEO Cheng Wei issued public apologies.
