Anthropic—Amazon data center for Anthropic AI will be powered 75% by new natural gas plants
Amazon building 1,200-acre data center complex in Indiana for Anthropic's AI (30 buildings, 2.2 GW capacity). Three-quarters of the new power plants will be fueled by natural gas. Anthropic advocated for US to build additional 50 GW of dedicated power by 2027.

Amazon's $11B Project Rainier data center for Anthropic powered by 2.6 GW gas-fired generation
Amazon opened 1,200-acre 'Project Rainier' data center in New Carlisle, Indiana in October 2025, dedicated to training and running Anthropic AI models. The facility requires 2.2 GW of power (enough for 1.6M homes). Northern Indiana Public Service plans to build 2.6 GW of gas-fired generation to power it, which could produce nearly 4× the greenhouse gas emissions of the previous coal plant on the site. None of the electricity will come from additional renewable energy. Amazon invested $8B in Anthropic and facility runs 500,000 Trainium2 chips for AI training.
